A bit history of the exhibition business

Today, the global exhibition business is an independent sector of the economy with a multi-billion turnover. But does everybody know about its history?

Trade fairs have existed since time immemorial. But since the advent of the first capitalist manufacturing enterprises and development of mass production of goods, the need for their sales and, consequently, the demonstration of these products to wholesalers arose. It is believed that the first industrial exhibition, in the modern sense of the word, was held in 1798 in Paris. It was followed by others. During the course of them, as nowadays, trade deals were made and business relationships were established.

In 1849 the British Union of Craftsmen (Society of Arts) offered to hold a similar exhibition in England. This exhibition marked a new period in the development of the industry. In contrast to the Paris shows, which involved only French people, they invited the manufacturers from different countries to the British Exhibition.

The Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations held in 1851 in Hyde Park, London was successful and became the first international industrial exhibition. It was also the first major exhibition and corresponded to the definition of “great”, covering over 90 000 sq. m of exhibition space, which brought together about 14 thousand exhibitors. It was visited by more than 6 million people - this was equal to one third of the population of Britain at that time. In addition, it became the first exhibition, which brought income to its organisers. These funds were spent to found the museums of Albertopol.

Back then the exhibitions were not highly specialized and industry-specific - on one platform different objects as a prototype of the fax machine, the so-called predictor of storms and the famous diamond Kohinur were demonstrated.

For this exhibition the architect Joseph Paxton built the Crystal Palace using iron and glass, which became an exhibition pavilion and at the same time, according to many, the main showpiece of the exhibition. It is interesting that in the competition for the best project of the central pavilion more than 200 professional engineers and architects participated, but it was won by not an architect, but the Manager of the Duke of Devonshire’s estates, Joseph Paxton.

By that time he had the experience of building large greenhouses and could offer an entirely new modular construction, which was relatively inexpensive and could be manufactured and assembled in a short time. The Crystal Palace is the first glass and metal building in history, and also the first experience of using standardized elements in the construction. The building, which looked like a giant greenhouse, was in conformity with the grand scale of the planned event: it was a huge terraced building, consisting of openwork iron skeleton filled with glass. The palace was enthusiastically accepted by the public, who considered it as a miracle of architectural art.

The interiors of the palace were no less impressive – a huge hall filled with natural light had no internal partitions. As a gardener, Joseph Paxton carefully treated green areas and retained almost all greenery of Hyde Park. Several huge elms were covered by the roof of the palace. Among the innovations of the building there were first pay toilets for public. The building served as a prototype of the modern exhibition halls - spacious buildings, specially created for exhibitions. Since then, such events have been held regularly.

The industrial exhibitions, while they served utilitarian purposes, contributed to the development of culture. Not everyone knows that many famous architectural monuments were created as temporary structures that were supposed to serve as a symbol of exhibitions.

So, the Eiffel Tower was built as the entrance arch to the territory of the exposition of the Paris Exhibition in 1889.

The first ferris wheel in the world was built in Chicago specially for the World Exhibition in 1893. The wheel with a diameter of 75 meters had to be a “hallmark” of the exhibition and to outshine the Eiffel Tower. It was driven by two steam engines and worked until 1904. The Spain Square in Barcelona (Plaza de España), the second largest area of this country was built for the World Exhibition in Barcelona in 1929. The landmark of the Square was two 47-meter towers at the main entrance to the exhibition, a copy of the bell tower of the Saint Mark’s Basilica in Venice.

The Expo 1967 in Montreal (Canada) attended by 62 countries and which broke the first day attendance record and had 569 thousand visitors on the third day of the exhibition, is considered as one of the most successful World Exhibitions. Since 1851, 61 World Exhibitions have been held. The record-holder for the number of visitors (more than 73 million people), the number of participating countries (192) and the cost of hosting (more than $5 billion.) was the Expo 2010 in Shanghai (China).

At the beginning of the XX century, commercial and industrial companies started to realize the role of this powerful tool, and along with the world industrial exhibitions the specialized industry fairs were held. From this moment the rapid development of the exhibition industry began. Today, it is a dynamically developing industry, which has its own infrastructure.

A prominent place in the community of exhibition organisers is taken by Iteca, which makes a significant contribution to the development of the national economy of Kazakhstan.
